This month in our newsletter, I want to talk about non-surgical vs. surgical and I will focus on facelifts, rhinoplasty and eyelid lift. I see many patients who are bothered by one or more facial features yet do not wish to go under the knife.

NON-SURGICAL FACELIFT
There has been much news in the media about the non-surgicalfacelift! It requires no recovery time, there are no scars and can be done during a lunch break.If that’s not convenient, we don’t know what is!?
Basically, a non-surgical facelift is a temporary enhancement that affects moderate issues of aging and can last from three months to two years, while a surgical lift addresses more severe sagging and drooping and can last up to 10 years or longer.
→What is a non-surgical facelift?
The non-surgical facelift employsdermal fillers such as Teosyal and toxins such as Botox to reverse signs of ageing. Botox is used to temporarily paralyse small muscles that cause frown lines, crow’s feet or other wrinkles, and is typically used on the forehead and around the eyes and mouth. While fillers are used to fill wrinkles and create volume.

However, as patients enter their 40s, 50s and 60s, the temporary solutions offered by toxins and fillers may no longer be satisfactory.
When a more severe kind of ageing affects the face of someone between the age of 40 and 60, a surgical facelift can be considered. The extent of surgery is always customized to each individual patient and depends on the amount of aging and the desired effect – patients can choose between a full-face lift, mid-face lift or lower face lift.

So how to choose you may ask? As you can see surgical and non-surgical facelifts have very different procedures, healing time and effects. You and I can talk about which procedure would meet your needs during your consultation at my Sunninghill Practice.
→Can non-surgical facelifts be combined later with surgical facelifts?
Yes, nonsurgical facial rejuvenation with fillers and Botox are appropriate in 30’s but eventually gravity, sun-damage, and genetics overcomes the face and the sagging skin and muscles over the jawline and neck are no longer improved with fillers.

NON-SURGICALNOSE JOB
→What is a Non-Surgical Nose Job?
A non-surgical nose job is a safe, non-invasive alternative to traditional rhinoplasty providing excellent cosmetic results with little or no pain and recovery time. It is also commonly called the “15-minute nose job”, because of its fast and no downtime procedure.
Unlike traditional, surgical nose jobs, non-surgical rhinoplasty does not actually alter the structure of the nose itself. This is done through the injection of dermal fillers such as Teosyal. Just asfillers are used to plump out wrinkles, they can fill out areas of the nose to correct minor deformities.

There is no need for general anaesthesia for non-surgical nose reshaping. A local anaesthetic, called topical anaesthetic is applied on and around the nose 15 to 30 minutes prior to the procedure to ensure you don’t feel any discomfort.

Something you need to know is that if you want a smaller nose, a thinner bridge, a large bump removed, or a narrower tip, non-surgical rhinoplasty will not accomplish the goals. In addition, non-surgical rhinoplasty cannot improve breathing problems or correct internal defects such as a deviated septum.
Nor can it (or any other procedure) give you a “perfect” nose. As always, the goal of cosmetic surgery is correction or enhancement, not perfection.
A non-surgical nose job is a great alternative to surgical rhinoplasty if you:
- Want to see potential rhinoplasty results before committing to surgery
- Only have a small surface deformity or irregularity
- Are not concerned about having permanent results
- Are adamantly opposed to surgery
- Do not wish to significantly reduce the size of your nose
- Do not require any functional nasal improvements (i.e., deviated/crooked septum, swollen turbinates)
→The Pros of Non-Surgical Nose Jobs
One of the most obvious and valuable benefits of non-surgical rhinoplasty is that, it is quick to perform and that there is no downtime afterwards. As your face changes naturally with age, you will be able to make alternative adjustments over time with this treatment easily. And the best part is that it can be much more affordable than full plastic surgery of the nose.

However, non-surgical nose jobs are not without limitations. The main limitation of the treatment is that the procedure is not permanent, lasting about 6 months with Teosyal. It also may not be able to correct major deformities, and cannot help patients seeking a smaller nose.

NON-SURGICAL EYELID SURGERY
Did you know there are non-surgical and surgical ways to treat the eyes?
As we age, we tend to lose fat in this area of the face and eyes. In some situations, it is best to cut away this extra eyelid skin if there is too much fatty tissue, but most patients will benefit more from inflating the brow and upper lid back to how it was when they were younger.
I can use facial fillers like Teosyal, and in a matter of minutes can make your upper eyelid and brow look the way it used to, without surgery or downtime. Often I combine this with Botox to further enhance the brow.
The non-surgical eyelid lift takes just a matter of minutes, and has an immediate effect. The upper eyelid filler procedure is pain free after being numbed. The results of the upper eyelid filler injection can last for up to 2-3 years!
I will always customize your treatment to fit your individual needs and goals. If a less invasive technique such as filler injections around the eyes will make you look your best, then I can accomplish that and tell you what is best for your needs.
The eyelid lift with fillers is a way that your eyes can look years younger in a matter of minutes without surgery or downtime.
The eyelid lift with facial fillers can also be used for patients who have had a surgical eyelid lift by another doctor with resulting eyelid hollowness or eyelid asymmetry. The eyelid hollowness gives an overall aged appearance, and can be improved with the use of facial fillers such as Teosyal.
